Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Mu et al. (1973). The type section is at western mountain of Yalai village, Nielamu County, Xizang. Coordinate: 86°05′E, 28°23′N. The synonym names of the formation are listed as follows according to Gao et al. (2014):

Synonym: (石器坡组); Gongbaqiang Fm, Qiangshari Fm, Tewu Fm, Yuemuri Fm, and Zhagaqu Fm


Lithology and Thickness

The formation, ca. 90 m at the type section, comprises sandstone at the base, graptolite-bearing black shales in the middle and limestones in the upper.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation is underlain conformably onto the Hongshantou Fm of Upper Ordovician.

Upper contact

The formation is conformable below the overlying Pulu Fm of Middle-Upper Silurian.

Regional extent

The formation mainly distributed in the Nielamu County (Nyalam County) of Southern Xizang. The thickness is ranging from 12 m to 181 m.

Fossils

The black shale contains graptolites Climacograptus normalis, C. medius, Streptograptus lobiferus, Monograptus priodon, etc. The limestone yield cephalopods and corals as follows according to Mu et al. (1973): Geisonoceras robustum, Geisonoceras? sp., Columenoceras sp., Michelinoceras capax, Favosites sp., Triplophyllum sp. etc.
